December—2017—
Dad picked up Damien from the
Sacramento Airport on Thursday, December 21 from his Mission in Colorado. Then, Mom, Dad and Damien flew to Tucson the
next day. We enjoyed a nice Christmas
vacation with C.J. and Laurie, the grandkids, and Camille. We all went on
hikes together, once to Garden Canyon and saw the pictographs (Indian Sketches
on the sides of the cliffs). The other
hike was to Coronado National Memorial where we had a nice picnic and saw some
trails where C.J. tracks and chases the illegal aliens up and down the
mountains. We also enjoyed going out to
eat and shopping in Bisbee, and shooting laser guns at the park next to C.J.’s
home. We had fun riding C.J.’s motorcycle. We played basketball and had lots of good
food. Lance had to stay in Idaho
and work around the clock Dr. Shifts.
We returned home December 27. The
next day, we took Damien to the train station in Truckee, and Camille picked
him up in Salt Lake, and Damien lived with Camille and Lance for about a month,
then enlisted and left to serve in the United States Army on January 28, 2018.

Hello Humpherys Family,
This past year was perhaps
one of the most fun we have had as a family together. During the summer we took
two awesome trips, to Spain and to Hawaii. In July, Porter, Laurie, and I
traveled back to the land of my mission. It was great to see it again 16 years
later. We visited Madrid and Barcelona, and swam in the Mediterranean, the
Atlantic, and even the Cantabrian Sea. We witnessed bull fights, festivals,
parades, and endless amounts of the tastiest food in the world. I even decided
to run with the bulls in Pamplona, Spain. That was pretty scary, but I'm glad I
did it. Porter loved Spain and was able to go on a tour of Barcelona's soccer
stadium, the soccer mecca of the world. He wants to go back someday. Maybe on a
mission! During fall break we took the whole family to Oahu, Hawaii as a
surprise vacation. We took the kids to the airport and they had no idea where
we were going until we got in line for the plane. In Hawaii we went to Laie and
experienced the Polynesian Cultural Center, BYU Hawaii, and saw the temple. We
swam in the ocean at Waimea, Waikiki, and found some sea turtles at Turtle Bay.
Jameson and I ate more than our fair share of food truck shrimp. It was so nice
to be in such a warm, beautiful place. This past year went really well for our
family as well. I feel very blessed with all the successes and experiences we
have had.
CJ- Besides the Spain trip
that I have always been dreaming of, I had a fantastic year. I continued most
of the year working on the Mountain Team with the Border Patrol. I wouldn't
trade this job for any other. My new calling at church is 2nd counselor in the
Sunday School presidency. I just had Lasik surgery on my eyes and am so glad I
finally did it. What a relief to not have contacts and glasses anymore.
Laurie- loved Spain maybe
even more than I did. Im so glad I was able to share with her the country where
I served my mission. Laurie is still working as a preschool aide, and is always
busy with children's activities. She has been called to the Young Women as a
Mia Maid advisor in church. She has also started again with earning her degree
in Early Childhood Education. She is on the PTO board at the kids elementary
school as well. I don't think she ever has much down time to herself.
Mercy- Went with some
classmates this year on a week long trip to Washington D.C. She was able to
have so many awesome educational and fun experiences with her friends, and
learn so much of our country's history. Mercy still does honors marching band,
and will be trying out in a few months for the high school marching band
playing trumpet. She is an amazing student and continually makes the
principal's list and is a member of National Junior Honor Society. She is
excited for high school next year, with her goal of attending BYU not too far
away. Mercy and Laurie also got to participate in the Tucson Temple Cultural
Celebration in August, it was one of the most incredible things they've ever
gotten to do. Mercy got to see President Uchtdorf and she said the celebration
really cemented her decision to serve a mission when she's 19.
Porter- Porter is a
phenomenal student-athlete. Like his sister, he almost always gets straight
A's. This is really impressive to me since he plays about 4 hours of soccer a
day. He is on a travel soccer team still, and we go to Tucson almost every
other weekend for his tournaments. He was also one of only two 6th graders to
make the middle school team as well, so he juggles two practices a day, along
with conditioning and weekend games. Porter also did track for the first time
last spring and really liked it. He is getting so big, and I think will soon
pass the whole family up in height. Porter was also recently ordained a deacon,
and continues on with Boy Scouts.
Jameson- Is still our most
independent child. He is not one for sports, but is one of the smartest 10 year
olds I can think of. I am always amazed at the grownup conversations/ideas he
comes up with. He is a student of science, and anything to do with
plants/animals. He is also an expert at any video game. He will learn and beat
any video game we buy him in just a short amount of time. He also is a
principal list student and wants to be an entomologist when he is older.
Jameson scored "Above Mastery" on a state reading and literature test
this year. His teacher told us that she had never seen anyone score on this
level in all her years of teaching.
Quinn- Is still our baby
princess. She is almost 7 years old now, and continues to excel in dance. She
also plays soccer and is pretty good at that too. Like her siblings, she seems
to have a knack for getting good grades. She still wants to be an actual
princess when she grows up, and loves to dress in beautiful clothes. She takes
a long time to get ready in the morning because she is always so particular
about what she wears, making sure that it matches, and that her hair is good so
kids won't think she has "messy hair".
We love everyone so much and
are sad we live so far away from everyone. That just makes it even better when
we actually get to see you! Have a great 2018!! - CJ & Laurie
