Ray's Clan 2017

Ray & Becky
Hi everyone,
For us (Ray and Becky), the year 2017 had some challenging times, but mostly many enjoyable events to remember. Here is a synopsis from our calendar:
Jan: Ray was back to work after Christmas break at his P.E. job at Eaglecrest Elementary. Becky continued to work Wednesday’s at her clinic and swim two days a week. They stay busy with church jobs and activities.
Feb: Lisa turned 40! She’s aging well, how would that be? She had a big party in Layton and entertained everyone with her clogging. Becky got family history pictures from her sister Claudia to eventually have a family history wall of pictures. The other wall has her nature, baking, and activities photography.
Mar: Stephanie and kids flew in for two weeks. The next day they had perfect Spring weather to go biking at Oquirrh Lake. Nephew Grant Jones married at Provo City Center Temple. Becky, Steph, Melanie went to 7 Brides for 7 Brothers, great performance! Becky’s sister Pam has been going through breast cancer treatments, many prayers said. (She has since finished treatments and is doing ok.) Grandkids had an early Easter egg hunt, took picture on deck stairs and slide.
April: Over Spring break, Ray and Becky drove to St. George to see Nadean, Carol and Blair. They did some biking. The red rocks were still there and the company and weather were great, but Ray decided St. George had become too crowded! So sorry to see Stacy’s mom go, she was a great lady.
May: Family saw the “Oliver” play. Becky stained the deck stairs. Garden was planted, early for them. Produce got off to a fast start due to good weather, but abruptly ended much earlier than usual. Perhaps adding lime to combat tomato blossom-end rot did it or a black thumb? Enough green beans were frozen for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners, though, better than last year. There were only enough tomatoes for one batch of salsa and some daily eating. Better luck next year! Becky’s dad called from Arizona and said he’d had pneumonia at age 99! They had a Memorial Day cookout and biking along Jordan River Parkway with Decker’s. They were so sad to have to go to cousin Michael Thurman’s funeral; he wasn’t old enough to go! He will be greatly missed! They had a Jones family party with niece Karen Cromar Wane at a West Jordan park, rode bikes on path. They went camping with Burnett’s at The Spruces at the #10 favorite site and celebrated Michelle’s birthday. The biking, hiking and scavenger hunt with grandkids was so much fun!
July: Becky got to see her dad in Orem, he was still sick. Becky retired on 7-7-2017 after a full-time nurse took over her part time position for the 5th time in 22 years! She could have gotten another job in the system, but it was time! Ray and some family went on their annual backpacking trip back to their first hike location: Cuberant Lake. Twenty plus years later the hike was harder than they thought it’d be! The Humpherys’ reunion in Star Valley with Lisa, Michelle and Ryan and their families was fun. They were the family in the orange t-shirts. Ha! Ken’s family organized great activities and games to play. The Dutch oven meals were great!
Aug: Becky made a lot of quilts in the cool of the basement for a church humanitarian project. The family toured candy factories for something fun to do with cousins. Becky got to see her dad two more times; he was in better health. They celebrated him starting his 100th year of life! They went camping with Lisa’s family at The Spruces at the #35 site, great new spot. Melanie’s family came up again, did more great Dutch oven. The eclipse on the 21st was amazing and eerie!
Sept: Burnett’s visited and rode the recumbent bikes. There was a small nectarine harvest this year, so they ate yummy nectarine crisp. They went to Logan for Ryan and Nat’s baby gender-reveal party. It is another granddaughter! Yeah! Melanie, Wes and Becky rode bikes near Gardner Village already decorated for Halloween.
Oct: They had leaf raking with the Burnett and Decker families, so fun. They needed the help, so many leaves! Their church ward boundaries changed and they were put into a new ward. It has been an adjustment to learn new names. During Ray’s fall recess they went to Park City to be with Lisa’s family. They had a great bike ride, went swimming, shopping and enjoyed the family with the condo activities. Then, late Saturday night on the 28th, Becky got one of the calls they never wanted: Wesley had type I diabetes, too, just like his sister Josie. They still celebrated Halloween together with insulin help! Life must go on, they all are so brave!
Nov: Ray found water damage in the RV over the cab and spent time trying to seal possible leaking areas. Becky went to Michelle’s house to help out. She was eight weeks pregnant with terrible morning/all day long sickness. By the 22nd great fall weather still held and they were able to play tennis and bike with Melanie and kids. They had their Thanksgiving dinner on the 25th and most of it turned out yummy.
Dec: This year they put up Christmas trees and all the decorations in anticipation for the Spear’s coming to spend the holidays. Sunday was Christmas Eve. Everyone came to church to enjoy the new ward’s choir then get a family picture, open presents, have a great dinner and end with a family piano concert. Great memories were made! On Christmas morning Ray had kidney stone pain. Merry Christmas! Not a great present! It took a week to pass. They (mostly Becky) did have fun playing ping pong, riding bikes, piano playing, enjoying movies, baking, cousin time and swimming with the Spears before their time was up. Carly’s and Jasmine’s baptisms were on the 30th, so special. That evening they were in charge of the Jones annual party so they had a 2018 New Year’s themed party.
The pictures show how fun this year was. We are looking forward to a wonderful 2018, hope yours is, too!
Love, Ray and Becky

Lisa Humpherys Gutierrez
Hello Humpherys family,

Winter- We had a few swim races for both Paige and Allison. They were so much fun to watch and cheer on. I turned 40 and had a wonderful celebration and party with family and friends. I continue to play basketball year round with Michelle most mornings of the week. I always look forward to this fun way to exercise. Seriously one of my favorite activities. I am starting a city league with our average age of 38. Guess we will never retire! It’s in the Humpherys blood.

Spring we had clogging competitions and the yearly Easter hunt with all of our wonderful family. We enjoyed time with Stephanie’s family who was visiting from Indiana.  We took dad to a Jazz game for Autism awareness day.  Isaac at 6 1/2 started to learn to ride his bike without training wheels.  That was a milestone.  We had a piano recital for Paige and I was nominated into the National Honor’s Society for nursing. Allison and I flew out to Indiana to surprise Stephanie for her birthday.  She was so surprised she fell to the ground when she opened the door.  That was so much fun.  I also went from per diem, 1 night a week, to part time, 2 nights a week at the same hospital I’ve been working at for almost 14 years. I have a supervisor position where I am the Charge nurse for some of my shifts. It’s a nice change of pace.

Summer we went back East and spent a week in Washington D.C. and Virginia.  That will be a trip to remember. We saw many monuments and George Washington’s house.  The kids spent time with their cousins and we saw beautiful country in both places.  I went with Allison to girls camp. I was in charge of the water front in helping the girls in and out of the canoes and kayaks. We had a wonderful time at Lake Lyman. Paige went with her clogging team to Disneyland and had the trip of her life!  We went on the grueling summer back pack trip on a difficult trail to the Cuberants in the high Uintahs. The scenery and peaceful bliss was worth the difficult terrain.  We enjoyed watching Allison’s summer camp play and watching her sing and dance. Star Valley for the Humpherys reunion was another fun camping trip. Spending time with cousins can never be beat!  We also spent many days/nights at Lagoon. We always looked forward to that. In August we had fun touring chocolate factories and spending the day with cousins. We also went camping at the Spruces in the motor home in Salt Lake City.  That was our first time there, and we hope to go back again soon. Fun memories. Don’t forget about the eclipse. We could feel the temperature drop when the moon went over the sun. Truly amazing and almost eerie.

Fall we enjoyed our annual Labor Day Backpacking trip with cousins and family. We played in the water, fished, and hiked. Truly a small peace of heaven.  October mom and dad joined us in Park city. We went on a fun bike ride, enjoyed the beautiful fall weather and had fun in the hot tubs and pool. We look forward to this every year.  Allison made one of the lead roles in her school play. 130 tried out and she made it in the top 12 lead roles. Her play is in May and we are so excited for her! I took Paige to the Jazz game again with the newly remodeled arena. That was so much fun and I’m glad we both enjoyed the game together.  Isaac did his hip hop boy dance festival and always steals the show.  The last two events of the year was of Carly and Jasmine’s baptisms. That was truly a magnificent event.  We also had the Jones family Christmas reunion party.  We had great food and great fun!

Looking forward to seeing everyone again this summer!
Love always,
Lisa, Allison 14, Paige 10, and Isaac 7

Ben & Michelle
Humpherys newsletter 2017

Well this year definitely had its ups and downs. We experienced 4 floods at our house. Our subpump broke, then the ice maker in our fridge twice, then the toilet. Pretty frustrating.
Ben broke/dislocated his ankle playing basketball. His injury was almost identical to Gordon Hayward’s. I’ve never seen him in so much pain. He had to get around on one of those scooter things, wasn’t fun.
We did a really fun siblings road trip to Vegas this summer with Ben’s siblings and spouses. No kids. It was great. The reunion in Star Valley was a lot of fun to see everyone. I always love going to Star Valley.
We were involved in a lot of activities this year with the kids: Cub scouts, basketball, wrestling, piano, baseball, soccer, gymnastics, and flag football. Ben coached Brayden‘s flag football and basketball team.
Brayden is 10. He went backpacking up in the Uintahs with my dad and everyone. They said he was such a trooper and always at the front of the pack. He’s such a good kid. I don’t know what we would do without our Brayden. He’s Ben’s little sidekick. They are always palling (spelling?) around together making jokes playing video games, Minecraft together, you name it. He also hates to miss any school because he doesn’t want to have any missing assignments he’s a great student.
Jasmine is 8 and was baptized on her birthday (Grandpa Humpherys birthday as well) with her best cousin Carly. It was a special day. She got really into wrestling this year. I was blown away. She did not want to lose a match and she wanted every medal and trophy she could get her hands on. She has 3 first place medals and one big first place trophy so far. Ben takes her to these tournaments around the valley and she mostly wrestles other girls but she has wrestled a handful of boys. She’s just awesome.
Stasia is 4 and started preschool this year and she is the biggest character of them all. If you ever need a laugh that day she will definitely give it to you and she’s not even trying to be funny. She has the biggest heart. I don’t even know how many times a day she tells me that she loves me, she’s so sweet.
Taylor just turned 2 and he is really starting to say a lot of words now. He’s so sweet. He loves to play with our chickens and our cat and do anything that the other kids are doing. He follows me around the house all day saying mom mom mom hi mom mom hi. It’s pretty cute.
Ben is still the high priest group leader in our ward and works for Fidelity Investments. He’s also doing his My Calc Rental business where we rent out graphing calculators to high school and college students all over the United States.

I saw an ad on craigslist where they were looking for actors and a makeup artist for a McDonald’s commercial. So I told Ben to apply for it and I applied for it as well and we both surprisingly got it and so we got to work on set together. I actually had to put makeup on him. It was kind of funny.
I had a really busy year for weddings doing hair and makeup. I love how flexible it is being a freelance artist so I can still stay home with my kiddos.
My calling was leading the music in sacrament meeting but once I found out I was pregnant I asked to be released because I knew I was going to be out for a while. I just get so incredibly sick my first trimester, it’s hard to function. I don’t think I went to church for a couple months. Pregnancy sure is a blessing but not an easy thing to go through. We are so excited though to welcome baby number 5 into our family. We’re going to name her Isabel Jane Burnett. They’re both family names on Ben’s side.

Legoland was our big surprise trip for the kids. Brayden and Jasmine worked really hard to save up their money and paid for half of their ticket. We were so proud of them. We told them we were going to drive there next April but we surprised them and took them in October and it was their first time on an airplane, first time to California and first time seeing the beach. (I guess Brayden flew on a plane to China when he was one and played on the beach when we lived in North Carolina when he was 18 months old but he doesn’t remember that). We stayed at the Legoland hotel and it was just a trip of a lifetime. Our kids are totally into Legos. They wanted to go there way more than Disneyland so we thought hey, this is the year to do it. It was a blast.
We always love to go yard saling every Saturday morning in the summers and we try to get in our Friday night dates as well. Ben’s really good about that.
As I have already shared on our family Facebook page I had some really cool Family History experiences reading about Grandma and Grandpa Humpherys. I read that book from cover to cover and really felt a lot closer to them knowing more about their lives and what amazing people they were. They’re such great examples to us in so many ways. Thanks for being such an awesome family, love you all.

Love,
Ben, Michelle, Brayden, Jasmine, Stasia, Taylor and Isabel.

Drew and Stephanie’s Recap of 2017
In January we celebrated Stockton’s 5th birthday. He had a dinosaur themed party with his friends.
February was filled with indoor soccer games, orchestra performances, play dates, Relief Society and Young Women activities, and lots of love on Valentine’s Day. Drew also was quite busy working at two law offices.
In March Stephanie and the kids flew to Utah for Spring Break. We attended Grant’s wedding, swam a lot, celebrated St. Patrick’s Day, early Easter, went downtown to visit Temple Square and the Church History Museum, and had a lot of family bonding time. Mom, Melanie, and Stephanie went to the play Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. We also rode banana bikes by the Daybreak lake.
In April Brooklyn sang at her Middle School’s talent show. She sang a song from Moana and the whole crowd went wild. We also celebrated Sadie’s two year old birthday!  Riley got first place with her pinewood derby car. We went to a lot of Riley’s travel soccer games. We celebrated real Easter. Stephanie was also made Young Women’s president.
In May we had a Cinco de Mayo party for Stockton and his friends. Drew and Stephanie went to a Guatemalan Mother’s Day dinner. We also celebrated Mother’s Day at church and Stephanie felt so grateful to be a mom. Lisa and Allison surprised Stephanie and flew to see us in Indiana. We had such a fun time shopping, seeing the Indy500, celebrating Stephanie’s 35th birthday at the Cake Bake Shoppe and going on walks on a trail near our house. Brooklyn received an award for Orchestra for the best Mental Attitude. Drew and Stockton also went to Father’s/Son campout and had a great time.
June was filled with swimming, popsicles, and end of the school year celebrations. Brooklyn and Riley went to a three week summer camp course and had so much fun taking cool classes like cooking, hip –hop, design and tinker, and Lego building robots.
July we went to a food festival downtown Indy and got to sample some yummy local food. Then Brooklyn and Stephanie attended girl’s camp and had an amazing spiritually filled week. Meanwhile back at home Drew and the other three kids celebrated the Fourth of July with fireworks that Sadie didn’t like at all. Brooklyn and Stephanie came home to celebrate Drew’s 37th birthday. Stephanie also took the kids to the children’s museum and the zoo. Then we celebrated Riley’s 10th birthday at Chuck-e-Cheese and the movies. Then we packed up the car and drove to New York City. We met Drew’s parents there and enjoyed all the sights for a few fun-filled days.
On August 1st Brooklyn, Riley and Stockton started school. Brooklyn is the queen of the school in 8th grade, Riley is ruling elementary school in 5th grade, and Stockton started full day Kindergarten. Our ward went through a boundaries change which was such a blessing because five of our good family friends moved out this summer so we met some new friends and got a new bishopric. Drew, Stephanie, Brooklyn and Riley went to the concert Pentatonix downtown at an outdoor park. All of the family rented a pontoon and rode around the Eagle Creek Reservoir. Brooklyn joined the Cross Country team and did so great! She learned a lot about perseverance and teamwork. She received the Best Mental Attitude award at the end of the season. Drew and Stephanie went to the play “West Side Story.”
Sadie also attends a music class once a week and absolutely loves it! She gets to learn all about art and music and social skills.
September was filled with many play dates, cross country meets, Young Women activities, and walks on the Eagle Creek trail. Riley discovered how to make “slime” and became obsessed and made it all the time! Sadie loves to learn and enjoys watching shows that teach her about the ABC’s and nursery rhymes. Brooklyn loves chatting with her friends on her phone and Stockton loves to play with his toys and legos.
October was so exciting because Drew officially was done working for his boss in Brownsburg and is only working for himself at Spear Legal Services. His business is thriving and Drew truly loves what he does, serving others and helping them with their legal issues. We also listened to General Conference and loved every minute of it! We enjoyed two weeks of school for Fall break and went to two pumpkin patches, the children’s museum, the zoo, a fun family farm, and a trunk or treat at our church. Drew and Stephanie got to see Jerry Seinfeld downtown and He was hysterical!! Stephanie laughed so hard she cried! Stephanie also took the kids trick-or-treating and Sadie was the biggest trooper she lasted the longest ☺
In November Stephanie was in charge of Young Women’s in Excellence. Brooklyn also celebrated her 14th birthday by going ice-skating and to Fazoli’s with her friends. We ate Thanksgiving at the church with some ward members.
In December Brooklyn and Riley played the violin and piano at a couple nursing homes. The Young Women also got to go Christmas Caroling at a few widow’s houses. We made homeless care packages and got to give back to some needy families in the ward. Then we were off to Utah for three weeks. Drew and Stephanie drove to Long Beach with Drew’s siblings, in-laws and his parents. They then went on a four day cruise to Catalina Island and Ensanada Mexico. Then they came back and celebrated Christmas Eve with all the Humpherys side of the family. We celebrated Christmas day with Grandma and Grandpa Humpherys and Uncle Ryan and Natalie. Then two days later Drew had to fly home and celebrate our 16th wedding anniversary apart. Stephanie and the kids made a lot of fun memories at Carly and Jasmine’s baptism and the Jones New Year’s Eve bash.
This year has been very good to us and we feel very blessed and look forward to the New Year with faith and hope!

Elliot & Melanie
Dear My Wonderful  Humpherys Family-
2017: Elliot and I on New Year’s Eve we cheered our glasses and said, “here’s to a year with no surgeries and no more ER visits.” Well you could say we jinxed ourselves.
We had two knee surgeries for Elliot, multiple ER Visits and another child diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes for Wes.
January we went and visited Ryan and Natalie up in Logan. It’s always fun to hang out with them, we went sledding, played the Wii and lots of card games.
We started out our year with Elliot breaking his tendon in his knee in another freak church ball accident. He went to the ER and they said it wasn’t broken but he went to a specialist and found out his knee cap was floating around because his big tendon was broken.  Meaning it wasn’t holding his knee cap in place. He had his surgery in March and it was really hard on everyone.
Also in March we had a fun treasure hunt and Easter egg hunt with cousins including Stephanie’s family.  The kids had a blast. I loved seeing Seven Brides with Seven Brother’s with Mom and Steph that was a highlight of their trip and also seeing Beauty and the Beast in the Theaters.  I love spending time with the Spears, wish they lived closer.
All my siblings and parents and some kids went and saw the play Oliver, it was well done and so funny. We went swimming and rode bikes with Mom and Dad in May.  We love spending time with mom and dad. They are so fun and always up for fun activities.
Josie took dance this year and she really enjoyed it with her friend Katie. They had a Program in June and she did so well.  I couldn’t believe how confident she was on stage but she said she didn’t want to do that again, way too scary.
June was full of camping; we went camping at the Spruces with Michelle’s family over her birthday.  We ate yummy food, fun little hikes and rode bikes and scooters.  We also went camping with friends down south at a very dirty dusty camp sight. I was cold, dirty and didn’t sleep much even though I slept in the van I thought I’d sleep better but I didn’t.  We had fun in spite of the usual stuff that happens during camping.  We played Frisbee golf, made fairy houses, played card games and roasted marshmallows and talked around the campfire.  We also played at the sand dunes and had yummy shakes in town. I don’t think we will do that again but it was a fun one time adventure.
July Elliot had family from Canada come and visit.  We played at Boondocks, the kids loved driving the go-carts, golfing and playing lazor tag.  We saw fireworks and celebrated a bunch of birthdays that month on the Decker’s side. Josie and I also took a rock climbing class and I realized how out of shape I was.  But it was fun to do with my Josie and learn a new skill.
September the kids started school, Josie is in 5th grade and Carly is in 2nd grade. They have wonderful teachers and enjoying the year.  Carly thinks math is too easy and wants to be more challenged.  Josie likes most parts of school but she loves her teacher the most. Wes started preschool this month he was so bored at home with just me so it was time to get him in.  He has a hard time leaving me every time but he loves it when I pick him up he tells me how much fun he had.
October we had fun picking out costumes and picked out pumpkins at a pumpkin patch.  Wes called it a Pumpkin Pie Patch, silly kid. At the end of October my cousin Holly took Carly’s Baptism pictures down town at Temple Square.  It was really fun to do something with just Carly and I.  Later that day I colored Holly’s hair and Wes was acting extra out of control.  He kept going to the bathroom more than 5 times an hour (I’m guessing but that what it felt like because it took me forever to do Holly’s hair)  He wanted to eat so much then he wouldn’t eat it after I made it. After Wesley finally went to bed I thought…I’m going to check his blood sugar.  I thought I was being paranoid but why was he acting so crazy.   The meter read over 600.  I ran downstairs and showed Elliot and he told me to go check again and it was the same results.  He said, “Well wake her up and we can check her Ketones.” I told him it wasn’t Josie it was Wes who I checked.  He called our pedestrian while I went and got Wesley dressed to go to the ER.  The pediatrician told us to take him to the ER at Primary Children’s Hospital.  It was the longest drive, I was shaking and in disbielf that this was happening for a second time. We finally got to the ER and they checked Wes out and had him pee in a cup.  Sure enough he was over 700.  He had Type 1 Diabetes. NOT ONE CHILD BUT TWO CHILDREN WITH THIS AWFUL DISEASE!!!!  We waited forever until they had a room upstairs to admit us. For some horrible reason they can’t give them insulin in the ER if they’re not in DKA. I think that’s just crazy and dangerous.  We finally went up stairs and it still took awhile to get him his insulin.  Wes was given some toys and play dough so we could check is blood pressure and prick his finger.  I don’t know why they thought he’d corporate when his blood sugar was sky high.  He was hysterical and so I had to hold onto him while they tried to take his blood.  Wes is so strong now and I had to use all my muscle to hold onto him.  He finally got some food and insulin and his shots after he fell asleep.  They give his shots after he eats because they aren’t sure how much he’ll actually eat. That night we fell asleep by 3 and woke up by 7. Wes had to go through a lot for a couple days and he was a trooper.  We played in the playroom all day until my dad came. We were on the fast track to leave because we already knew what we were doing.  I had to go to one nutrition class and watch their training videos again but that was pretty much it. Wes finally fell asleep for a few hours while my dad and I were able to eat dinner in some peace. We were discharged around 7pm and finally got home.  I had been praying for so long how to learn how to take care of Wesley and his anger and misbehavior. We were happy to figure out was causing Wesley’s challenges and glad to know we can help him be the best Wes he can be. It’s rough for a 4 year old to understand everything and he often ask’s me, “why do I have Diabetes.”  Hoping for a cure some day.
Thanksgiving and Christmas was spent with family and friends.  The kids were spoiled for Christmas, and we love making new memories as our small family.
We hope everyone had a great 2017 and we hope 2018 we be much better.
Love,
Elliot, Melanie, Josie, Carly and Wesley

Ryan & Natalie
2017 the year of all the BIG things!
We always joke that we always do everything all at once and this year proved it.
The first thing we did in the New Year was buy Ryan a drum set! He’d been missing them for YEARS and He’s been having jam sessions with our friend. Failed attempts at teaching Natalie have been made but she’ll stick to dancing to music rather than making it. The nieces and nephews love it too, especially Wes Decker.
Over Christmas we decided to take the IUD out on February 24th, our four year engage-iversary, and see what happens maybe bring a non-furry baby into our family.
We had been looking at houses on and off for about a year and a half, not seriously but considering it. We decided to check out some homes with a builder that builds affordable homes so we set up a meeting with the bank to get a loan on February 24th right after our appointment with my doctor.
February 24th turned into literally the craziest day of our lives. We went to the doctor super nervous both of us questioning what we were doing like ARE WE REALLY DOING THIS?! We went to Jimmy John’s for lunch, Ryan didn’t say anything just looked like he saw a ghost and Natalie just couldn’t stop laughing- both we’re sure in shock, handling it our own ways. The next day met with the builder to talk about homes and turned out there was a spec home that was move in ready so we checked it out. Natalie fell in love immediately and Ryan being the practical one he took longer to warm up but once he saw the loft area he was in. We literally put money down that night.
Could we have made anymore big decisions that weekend?!
We moved into our house in April! It was so exciting! Got a fence put up and Ryan created his dream media room with a projector he saved for a long time to get. Natalie was able to send 6 Kenyan kids to 3 semesters of secondary school through Rise with Kenya.
We have an awesome group of 3 couples we hang out with A LOT, they’ve become like our Logan family. We played in a softball league with them. It turns out we really just don’t like sports but it was just to hang out with our friends and make new ones.
A half an hour before our first game on May 24th Natalie took a secret pregnancy test since she just kept taking them so Ryan kept telling her not to buy anymore but she didn’t listen. IT WAS POSITIVE. She broke to the news to Ryan and he just couldn’t believe it! We went to our game in shock – IS THIS FOR REAL?! Over the next couple weeks the sickness set in and Natalie was throwing up over 20+ a lot of days even at work. Her work bathroom became a too familiar friend. Though they both were convinced it was a boy – Ryan’s wish came true and it’s a GIRL.
We had a blast throwing a Murder Mystery Pirate Birthday Party and the Gender Reveal the same weekend over Nat’s birthday. We really felt so loved and know the little baby is already so loved. Even by the fur babies she’ll come to love who cuddle Natalie’s stomach and feel little kicks every now and then.
Natalie made a hard decision to quit her hostile job. Hoping to pick up some freelance work or find another job after the baby comes but until then Izzy, Sheba and Theo get a stay at home cat/dog mom. Ryan loves his job and is so good at it they are scared to lose him. He’s been honing his skills in coloring and getting really good at it. He’s done a few film festivals and videos for people being their colorist.
A lot of BIG things happened this year. We are so excited to bring our baby into the world next year and show her all the people and things we love.

PREVIEW OF 2018
Claire Anne Humpherys was born January 25, 2018. We had gone in for a routine 39 week checkup at 9 am when we were told due to preeclampsia she’d have to be induced. She was induced at 12 pm and things were progressing well but by 6:30 pm the contractions were too long and as the doctor explained it was as if she had been holding her breath for 2 minutes and then gasping for air at the end of each contraction (causing her heartrate to drop dangerously low) so an emergency C-Section was now on the table. It was easy for Nat to make the call when the anesthesiologist said, “Can you hold your breath for 2 minutes?” She was born wide eyed and alert at 7:07 pm. We fell instantly in love!
The whole day was a whirlwind and nothing went how we expected but we went with the flow and couldn’t be happier with how it all turned out!  - Ryan & Natalie

Ray & Becky 2016

    NEWSLETTER FOR 2017
From Ray and Becky:

2016 was a wonderfully eventful long year with many highs and a few lows. Yet, we feel we have been incredibly blessed and have hope for many more good times with family and friends.

Church jobs: We were team teachers for the cute Primary 7/8 year olds then Ray called into the H.P. group leadership, still Ward missionaries.

Work: Becky getting regular weekly nursing shift at clinic, saving for retirement. Passed off CPR! Ray still working as P.E. teacher at EagleCrest Elementary, but looking forward to retirement!

Gardening: Peas planted early, kept producing until the heat of July killed them (took too long, but were yummy!) Got soil sample to USU and it needed nitrogen. Beans grew really well compared to last year, froze them for green bean casseroles. Kept up with the zucchini. Tomatoes finally ripened in September,  able to put up some salsa and chili sauce. Planted flowers in three new planters. Roses did great. Nectarine tree went crazy with over-production, yummy and juicy. We ate and gave away to neighbors and co-workers. We had thinned 8+ buckets of fruit before it mass-produced any way.

Jan: TV’s American Idol started its last season the 15th year! So sorry to see it go away! No ice fishing this year.

Feb: Baby Taylor Burnett was blessed. Lisa turned 39, we are the ones getting old! Got new garage door opener and piano tuned.

Mar: Went to lunch with Lisa, Michelle and Melanie and Stasia and Taylor for b-day. Saw Lisa and Paige clog. Played duet piano piece from Home Alone with neighbor Dana Hill, then they moved! Sad face! Easter party at Michelle/Ben’s.

April: Went to Logan to the baby animal day with Ryan and Natalie and Melanie and Michelle’s families. Michelle and Melanie still like to ride horses! Saw Aunt Grace/Uncle Bill, cousin Craig/Laurel Jones in Provo with sister Claudia after their grandson Cameron grad form BYU. Claudia likes to take pictures of pretty flowers like Becky! Lilacs in bloom!

May: Natalie Humpherys graduated from USU and then went to Africa in June. Elliot Decker graduated from the U, too. So proud of both! Trae Pilster got married, reception in South Jordan. Becky’s cousin’s daughter Candace Jones had wedding reception in Provo, nice to see Billings cousins. Rode banana bikes with friend Jen K. and Karen and her nephew Jim at Oquirrh Lake.

June: Steph and family here for 4 weeks, rode bikes, went to Park City, RV camping at the Spruces, lots of fun. Niece Holly Jones got married in new Provo City Center Temple. Ryan got to see Becky’s Rasmussen grandparents’ old house in Provo, took pictures. Baby shower for niece Karen Cromar. Saw WEST SIDE STORY play at Centerville Legacy Theatre with family, awesome!!

July: Burnett’s hosted the 7th annual R &B family reunion in Clearfield. Drew flew in from Indiana and we had a complete family picture after riding bikes to a nearby park. Hot day! Florence/Larry hosted the annual Humpherys’ reunion in a park in Pocatello. Great to see everyone there. (Hit orange road barrels on way up when ran out of road passing a truck, knocked alignment out, but we were protected from above!)  Baby shower for Brynn Evans at Celeste Evans’ house.

Aug.: Camping with Lisa, too hot! Some water fun. Paige is a natural on a wake board. Went to Bob’s funeral, so sad to see a great man go. Becky’s swimming friend turned 75, she can still out swim her! Got another health insurance plan and LTC plans after 6 months’ consideration. Camille’s bridal shower here.

Sept: Camille and Lance married on the 30th, great wedding and reception! Sally and Newell here for the week to tie up loose ends. Sally biked miles to Curves to exercise, who does that?? Ha! We are the lazy ones! Myrna and Kenny here. Mryna and Becky shopped for Camille to help out. Kelly and Sandra stayed over.

Oct: Ray had one cataract done and we went to Park City to be with Lisa and family. Halloween: 3 amigos pumpkins, Melanie/Elliot and kids here, Becky pirate, Ray in scary shirt. Becky did one last bike ride with friend Else, she needs to work out more!

Nov: Josie got diabetes, so scary, lots of prayers, tended Carly and Wesley.  Ray had second cataract done, lots of eye drops. Good turkey day food, nice pies, rolls, crockpot homemade stuffing, celebrated on Saturday here with family coming down except for Ryan/Nat in FL and Steph/Drew in IN.

Dec: Jasmine in Elf play, cute. Didn’t put up xmas trees, planned to go to Burnett’s but kids got sick with colds and we didn’t want them! Ray put up outside lights, Becky put up wreaths and poinsettia plants and small décor. Got new cool nativity. Lisa/Jim hosted our family Christmas party at their house in Layton, a lot of fun and good food with a visit from Santa. Jones family Christmas party hosted by Claudia/Scott in Bountiful. Very entertained by magician, Santa’s visit and basketball. Becky made fancy dark chocolate peppermint cookies with ganache filling. Never again! Took too much time and they turned out really big and very rich! Woke up to a very white Christmas with big snow storm, Ray used snowblower. Becky sang in church choir for Christmas program, great music. Ryan/Nat came over, glad to have some family. Becky needed an antibiotic, tried to avoid ER visit…nothing else available except on-call MD and Walgreens pharmacy. (Getting sick on a Sunday on Christmas during a snowstorm isn’t a good idea!) Becky’s sister Pam got breast cancer but hopes to beat it! Pray for her, please!

We hope to see you all at the family reunion for 2017 and that you stay healthy and happy this year.

Love,
Ray and Becky

Lisa & Jim 2016

February 2017
Hello Humpherys Family,
It’s fun to look back at our newsletters from year to year and wonder, where did the time go?
2016-Here are the highlights

Jim
Went to a lot of swim meets, clogging performances, and soccer games last year. He taught primary to the 10-11 year olds. Him and Lisa did a triathlon together in May. That was the same one we did in 2009 where we started participating in triathlons. Jim turned the big 4-0 too! He also helped us with a home improvement with painting and new floors in our main living areas. Jim enjoys training for triathlons, swimming in masters meets and spending time with the family.

Lisa
I enjoy playing basketball in the mornings with different leagues at local churches.  I continue to clog on a moms clogging team where we also participate in competitions. I was released as the young women president and was put over the emergency preparedness, YW basketball and volleyball coach, and asked to go stake girls camp on the committee.  I was on the trek medical team in June helping the youth and the leaders. What a life changing event I was a part of!Loved going on many adventures in 2016 with our family. (We also now have a white van instead of a black van.)

Allison
Allison continues art lessons and is very talented.  She continues on the swim team where she took 2nd place in three events at state in 100 yard backstroke, 50 yard backstroke, and 100 yard breast stroke. That qualified her for an all star team that she was a part of called Western Zones.  They competed in August in Kearns, UT.  That was a special event she was blessed to be a part of.  Allison attended her first girls camp. She had a lot of fun.  She has gotten really good at the piano.  Allison also got braces and started 7th grade.

Paige
Paige has been improving on the swim team. Her times have been getting faster. She loves clogging and performing at competitions. She turned 9 in January (now she’s 10 since I’m writing this in 2017).  She tries hard at school and is a great helper with her brother.  She plays the piano and I love hearing her songs.  Paige earned the “Helpfulness award” at school out of all the students in 3rd grade. Paige also loved our Labor Day backpacking trip with Allison, other cousins and our October trip to Park city.

Isaac
Isaac graduated from Kindergarten and works very hard at school. He played soccer and loved playing both goalie and on the field.  He loved our trip to Disneyland over spring break. I took him on some hikes where he could overlook the entire valley. He loved those hikes.  He also loved camping with grandpa and grandma in their RV and kayaking in the lake.  Isaac took private swim lessons and was improving each time.  Isaac loves friends and his cousins.  We enjoyed both family reunions we had this summer with our Humpherys cousins.

Looking forward to seeing everyone in Star Valley this summer!
Love,

Jim, Lisa, Allison 13,  Paige 10, Isaac 6

Michelle & Ben 2016

Well let's see, I don't think a ton of things have changed for us in 2016. I got to go on an 8 hour horse back ride up in Montana with Ben's dad and a couple other horse lovers, I was in paradise. It was a lot of fun to see Camille get married to such an awesome guy, welcome to the family Lance.  I know you guys are so happy and we are happy for you. It was also fun seeing a lot of you at the reunion this summer and Bob's funeral. Bob will definitely be missed. His smile and laugh were contagious. That was always a highlight as a kid to go visit Bob and Sharon at their store, buy a candy and walk around and look at all the antiques, that was always fun.
Ben is still the high priest group leader. It's just funny because he's the youngest one of the group. He still works out every day at the gym during his lunch and continues to eat healthy to keep in shape. He still runs his renting graphing calculator business. That's been getting better and better every year.
I am the music chair person and lead the music in Sacrament meeting. I still do hair and make up on the side and love having a side income and have a creative outlet of doing something that I really love.
Brayden is 9 and has been doing great at his wrestling tournaments, scouts, basketball games, soccer games, swimming lessons and piano lessons. It sounds like he's quite the funny guy at school and loves to make everybody in his class laugh. I know he for sure makes us laugh at home.
Jasmine is 7 and wants to be a teenager tomorrow, which makes me nervous. She already tells me how I should do my hair and brings home boys phone numbers from her class. But she is a real sweetheart with a good heart. She has the most endearing prayers that are pretty precious. She likes to rap and loves to entertain us at home. She was in the play Elf and soccer and swimming. She is the only girl on her basketball team and she is really aggressive. She doesn't let those boys push her around.
Stasia is 3 and now in sunbeams. You never know what's going to come out of her mouth next, she is hilarious. She is always making us laugh and her sunbeam teacher adores her. She is so good at playing make-believe with her imaginary friends and stuffed animals, it's so cute. Taylor is 1 and walking all over the place now. He loves to clap all the time and say uh-oh. He's always smiling his cheesy grin and we love it. He loves to throw balls and giggle. He doesn't need to wear his special shoes anymore which is such a blessing. His feet are totally fine now.
We also have 2 Chinese foreign exchange girls that live with us and sometimes that's not always easy. But they come to church with us and we have taught them how to pray and learn about God and Jesus Christ. We think it's so good for our kids to learn about different cultures in the way other people live.
I am so glad that we continue to do this newsletter every year and we look forward to seeing you guys this summer at the reunion.
Love, the Burnetts

Stephanie & Drew 2016

Hello to all,

2016 was a great year!

Drew has been very successful with his law practice and continues to grow it every day.

Stephanie is serving in the young women's program and is kept busy shuttling the kids around to their various activities. She is involved with a playgroup, a book club, and likes to go to girls night with her friends.

Brooklyn is in the 7th grade and turned 13 this year. She had her first boy/girl party. She is also excelling in school. She went to district for her science fair and played the violin for school and earned a gold star rating. She is having fun playing the guitar and babysits a lot when Drew and Stephanie go on dates. She is growing up and maturing quickly. She cooks and bakes and is our right hand woman who we can always count on.

Riley turned nine this year and as her name implies she riles us up with her shenanigans. She is involved in travel soccer and has improved greatly. She likes to play goalie and defense. She loves listening to music and watching random YouTube videos.

Stockton has been blessed to be in a ward with a lot of boys his age so we get together with them about twice a month. He is in preschool and learning and growing up so much! He is becoming more responsible and a helper around the house. He is a fun, sweet and sometimes teaser of a brother. He loves to pretend that he's a brown bear and growl at people.

Sadie is such a cute girl who is developing so fast that we can't keep up with her. She finally learned to love bath time, or bubbles, as she calls it. She is learning to talk and runs away from me so fast. Right now her addiction is a nursery rhyme TV show that she calls "Star." She is so smart and sweet and we just love her to pieces!

As a family we had the opportunity to travel to Utah in June/July. We loved connecting with family members and making memories.

In December Drew and Stephanie celebrated their fifteen year anniversary and went on a Caribbean cruise. Then we spent Christmas at a cabin in the woods.

We are sad that we won't be able to make it to the reunion this year but we send you all of our love from Indiana!

Melanie & Elliot 2016

Ryan & Natalie 2016

2016 was a fun year! Natalie graduated with her bachelors degree from Utah State University and got a full time job doing graphic design at a local print shop. She went to Kenya in the summer to volunteer to help teach the kids out there. Which inspired her to fulfill her lifelong goal of starting her non-profit charity which will help keep the kids in school and continue their education. Ryan was called to be scout master, following in his dad's footsteps :) He spent a week at summer camp up in Wyoming! We did a couple small trips including skiing in Park City, going on a snowshoe trip to a yurt in Idaho [which was one of the most miserable trips of our lives ha!], and some rockclimbing in Maple Canyon.

Love you all and wish you a good 2017,
Ryan, Natalie, Izzy, Sheba and Theo

Ray & Becky 2015

NEWSLETTER FOR 2016 ABOUT 2015

The year 2015 was lived as fully as possible! Ray and I have been riding bikes with or without the kids and grandkids for added excitement in our lives. 2015 was a warmer, drier year, so we were even able to ride on Valentine’s Day then get an early dinner at Dickey’s. Melanie and family were just getting off their cruise on that day so we could stop praying so hard for their safety! Taking three kids with them was a worry for us.

We went on a bike ride a month later on March 14 with Michelle and Ben’s family and had a picnic lunch (made by Ben) by the little pond close to their house.

Our neighbor bought Ray’s car in early March so we got back what we put into it for a new transmission. It was the newest car we ever bought but put more money in it to keep it working than the older cars! Beware of Buicks!  The 4 cylinder Toyota pickup we got in August 2014 has been working well for Ray’s commute to work each day and to haul the bikes around.

Melanie and I wanted to be in Indiana when Stephanie had their baby on April 23. The only problem was that I hadn’t gotten on a plane in about six years because I’d become claustrophobic on our trip to North Carolina to see Michelle’s family. So for six weeks I worked to overcome such an affliction. I wrote down every saying I could to convince myself it was pretty much all in my head, ask for blessings from heaven and then become braver than I thought I could be! I learned to look at the space I DID have, breathe deeply, repeat my sayings, play with little Wesley and talk to Melanie. We got there without me freaking out and having the plane make an unscheduled landing! We spent a week and a half in the Spear home and enjoyed all the time we had with them. And now little Sadie is growing up so quickly, besides their other cute kids!

Our other worry for 2015 was for Ryan before, during and after he got his carpal tunnel surgery in May. Once a parent, always a parent!

Lisa was able to fly out to visit Stephanie and family in May, too. We want them all to have close relationships even if they live far away. She helped Stephanie with the baby and the housework and rode bikes with the girls. It was hard for Riley to say good-bye to her sweet Aunt Lisa.

In June we took the RV to camp at The Spruces in Big Cottonwood Canyon. We weren’t able to get our old spot but got an even better spot down lower. It had plenty of shade and a very shallow trickling stream. Michelle’s family went with us and Melanie’s visited. The cousins had a ball together. They got really dirty and wet, ran out of dry clothes and had to use adult clothes, but memories were made! Ray even snapped a picture of a moose that happened to tromp through the woods at the right moment.

The garden eventually produced a lot of nice tomatoes though the beans never did. Salsa and chili sauce were put up. The neighbor’s apricot trees didn’t produce, either, so we have NO nectar now, what a shame!

In July, Ray, Lisa and girls, besides some of my family, went on the annual backpacking trip. It was Paige’s first year so her hike in was a bit hard, but once she got to camp she kept wanting to hike!

The next week took us to Billings for the reunion. We had Michelle’s family come with us, going through Yellowstone Park to see the geysers. We visited Ben’s grandparents in Bozeman before going into Billings and staying with my cousin Stan. We hadn’t been to Billings for a long time. We saw my dad’s brother, Uncle Ted, who had been sick. It seemed almost surreal to see my old home and the places where I had grown up. Jan, John, Curt, Chelsea and Jason put on a great reunion! We were glad to see all those who were able to make it. Thanks again!

In August, Ray and Michelle flew out to spend time with Stephanie and family. They got to tour the new Indianapolis Temple, too. I tended the Burnett kids; hard, but fun! The next week we went to the Ray Rich Humpherys’ reunion in Paris, Idaho seeing Ray’s cousins and their kids. Lisa learned she already knew a cousin (Stanley’s daughter) and didn’t even know they were related! She has enjoyed spending even more time with her since they live close to each other.

It’s been 40 years since we got married so the kids threw a very nice anniversary party. Thanks again for all your work, we have an awesome family!

We taught The New Testament in Primary to the 10-11 year old kids all year and learned a lot ourselves. Ray continues to volunteer at the temple and I continue to find Coulson cousins to add to the family tree!

At the end of September we bought some recumbent bikes like we had ridden at the Bear Lake KOA campground during the reunion in 2013. It took a while to get them put together, but they have been so much fun!!

October conference time was spent in the RV back at The Spruces. Camille came up and spent the night with us. It was rainy and cool but the mountains smelled so good; someone should bottle that smell!

A week later, after Brayden was baptized, we secretly picked up Stephanie and kids from the airport. We wanted to surprise everyone at our annual R and B family reunion in Park City the next week. We barely kept the secret but pulled it off! We had a lot of fun swimming, hiking, eating and playing together! The pictures show all thirteen grandkids sitting on a rock wall and Michelle was expecting baby number four. They are all growing up so quickly!

November still had great weather. We rode the bikes with Ryan and Nat on the Utah State campus, a wonderful place with wide walkways. The fall day was so beautiful! Then the next weekend we rode the recumbent bikes with Lisa and Michelle’s kids near their house in Clearfield.

I hadn’t worked at my clinic for a couple months, (though I’ve worked there part-time for 20 years now), but started getting work again and now am scheduled regularly. Michelle and Ben’s baby Taylor was born on the 23rd, two weeks earlier than expected, so glad they are healthy and his legs are better.

My niece Karen got married in the Jordan River Temple the week after Thanksgiving so we got to see my sister and family from Colorado Springs.

The Christmas Season was wonderful. Ryan and Natalie spent Christmas Eve and morning again with us then the whole family came the next day. What a fun, noisy bunch they are!

We had two more graduations in 2015: Drew from law school and Elliot from University of Utah. Way to go, guys, proud of you!

2015 was great! We have been blessed with continued good health and work and family activities and hope to be so in 2016! See you all at the reunion.

MEMORIES OF VISITING THE HOMESTEAD BY BECKY

Way back when I was dating Ray (1974-75) I learned what a beautiful area he grew up in: Star Valley, Wyoming. It got way too cold for me in the winter; way below zero quite often, but it was beautifully green and a bit too hot at times in the summer, though it would cool down a lot at night.

One very cold, bright morning when Ray and I were staying with Kenny and Tawny, we drove to where Dean was out feeding the elk.  We couldn’t stay long, my feet were starting to freeze, yes I remember the temperature to be -40, but what do I remember any more? I only had hiking boots on (waffle stompers) and not my trusty moon boots, oh, yeah, got those later on in life. But it was fun to see all those elk so tame come down and gather around the wagon and eat the hay next to Dean.

In the summer of 1974 I rode up from Utah with Robert to spend time with Ray for a few days before going back for more summer school classes. I got to hang out with Newell during the day while Ray was at work. He was cutting the hay and I rode with him on the tractor. He was a fun guy then, too! I snapped a picture of him on the tractor and bottle feeding a calf in the barn. At that time Dean had screeching peacocks, a momma pig with a lot of piglets, chickens, some sheep and pretty horses. It was a fun experience for a city girl like myself.

Mentioning sheep, after we were married with kids, there was a mean ram complete with big curly horns out in the barnyard. Jimmy and Kelly had played toro and matador with it, from what I was told, so it was ready to butt any innocent by-standers. So, one evening the men went up into the pasture to get the horses and my job was to open the gate when they came down. I stood facing the metal gate inside the barnyard talking to about ten year old Carol as she sat on a horse. Then, suddenly, I was hit so hard on the lower half of my body that my shins were crushed into the metal. I turned around to see what had hit me and the shaggy sheep was pawing at the dirt with his horns down ready to ram me again. I climbed the gate slowly to escape. I asked Carol why didn’t she tell me the ram was about ready to charge? She asked me how I could tell it was a boy sheep? I tried to explain… She didn’t act like she’d noticed and had no idea that was the dangerous on-site ram. Ha! The horses came thundering down, kicking up dirt and dust as I clung to the top of the gate, but I couldn’t open it, in too much pain, and worried about hanging on to it as it swung open! The men asked me why I didn’t open the gate. I told them there was this ram…

I took pictures of Dean and Newell having fun with the hats and the boys and Neva and Dean in a carriage. I think they were born too late sometimes, wishing they had lived during the Wild West.

We got to go on one of Dean’s Wagon’s West wagon train expeditions before we were married. Dean was the big man people looked up to and the kids followed during camp.
One summer when John and Jan and his friend Frank Carter were visiting they went fishing. I have a picture of them lined up outside with Dennis Madsen and Dean showing the fish fried up in a pan. It was really hot so they had bandanas around their foreheads. Dean went and got one of Neva’s polyester, red scarfs and put that on to look like one of the group. It was pretty funny.

Later on they had a leg-wrestling match in the front yard. At the end of that day it was when Dean said we should have a family reunion like this “get-together” every year. Now you all know when the family reunion idea started, right from the lips of the family patriarch! So sad we lost him about 7 years later.

We took our kids to SV for Thanksgiving many times. They had fun sledding down the hills near Florence’s house. One time Ray rode a white Appaloosa horse as it pulled the kids on their sleds. As the horse would start up they’d nearly get whiplash but would hold on tight. We have it on video little Melanie in her blue coat hanging onto the sled as the horse took off.

The kids were often sick with bad colds when we were to travel up there, but they seemed to sleep well in the crib and get better pretty fast, faster than at home. I always wondered if it was the differences in the altitude.

The summer visits were always exciting, trying to enjoy some time away from the usual grind and to keep the kids safe.

When Lisa was about five, she slammed her thumb in the trailer door. It took out a piece in the middle. Dean poured turpentine over it. It healed up quite nicely! Maybe there was something to the old home remedies, after all, I remember thinking.
The summer of 1985, when I was occupied with baby Melanie, I went looking for two year old Stephanie. She had gotten away from me. I thought she had gone to the backyard. I called her name and could hear her and Michelle and Shawn, who were five at the time. I looked up and all three were straddling the top of the little metal shed. I asked them how they got Stephanie up there. (I figured the other two could have climbed on something.) Shawn said in his matter of fact tone, “It was nothin’, I just put my rope ‘round her and pulled her up!”

In about 1983 all the kids got on horses for a ride up the pasture. One of Robert’s dogs started barking at the horses and they started running. All the kids fell off and got bumps and bruises. Of course they were all terrified. I got outside just after it happened. Ray said I just missed all the excitement. I’m glad I didn’t see it. I do remember all the kids walking back to the house crying and then seeing Shawn sitting next to Gerald on the couch saying his back hurt. Angels must have been watching out for them that day and all the other times there were accidents. I guess this wasn’t a good memory, only that the kids didn’t get hurt seriously.

The activities at the reunions are great memories. The tug-a-rope was always fun to see who would end up in the mud.

Ray has shown me the boundaries of the land his different family lines have owned in each direction from his home. I think he felt connected to them and the history of his family. As I have read the family histories and even visited Archie Gardner’s home in Scotland I think it is neat our kids have these brave people as their ancestors. Ray told me his stories so I told him I’d type them for him next.

STORIES GROWING UP IN STAR VALLEY BY RAY
                      (dictated to Becky)

Ray said that he and his brothers did their fair share of fighting. He remembered one he had with Robert. They wrestled until they both were too exhausted to go on and mutually agreed to quit…no winner and no loser!

Another time he punched Gerald in the mouth and chipped his tooth. He’s not sure he’s forgiven him for that one!

One summer Dean was going to be gone doing a “bug job” (spraying for bugs in trees) so he told the boys what work had to be done on the farm and put Robert in charge. Robert would tell his three younger brothers what to do. Things didn’t change much later on in their lives, either. The running joke became, “Oh, no, here comes Robert, he’s going to put us to work!”

Ray didn’t remember what trailer door Lisa had gotten her thumb slammed in at age five that I wrote about. Then he realized it must have been the lambing trailer that Dean had used when they would be out over-night waiting for ewes to give birth. He said his dad would get up in the night to check on them, to see if any needed help. If they did, he knew how to turn them.  Sometimes they had to pull out the calves, too.

Which leads to the next story: how they used to de-horn and castrate the calves and lambs in the spring. The long-ago ranchers used their teeth to help with the lamb’s castration process (which Dean had Ray try once), but then they got tools and banding to do it more efficiently. Ray remembers someone cooking up the Rocky Mountain Oysters…he figured his mom did. Anyone else remember this? Maybe it would be better to forget!

As a boy, Ray was “farmed out” for two summers by his dad to live with his cousin Deb Wolfley. He doesn’t know why except to learn to work hard. They changed sprinklers, hauled hay, milked cows and fed horses. He remembered it was a Sunday (not a good day to work?) and he was on the tractor pulling a hay wagon with a big load of hay down a hill. He knew he had to go slowly since the wagon and load were too big for the tractor. As he gently applied the brakes it was still too hard and the tractor jack-knifed. He knew he had to jump off to avoid injury, so he baled! The tractor turned completely upside down with the motor still running.

Ray was reading the 2006 Humpherys’ Herald where Neva told stories in her own words. He enjoyed hearing about the kinds of transportation she grew up with. Go back and read it!
